Such a cool event. That’s what we kept saying during the Northwest Overland Rally (NWOR) last weekend in Plain, Washington. “Overlanding” as it’s known brings offroading and camping together at levels ranging from overnight just off the paved road to full on around the world vehicle supported expeditions sometimes taking years to complete. The NWOR showcased vehicles, equipment and people that ran the entire spectrum from weekender to professional overlander all in one place. Family friendly and very laid back, NWOR offers classes, offroading, and a huge raffle around the fire at night.
Like many of the vendors (60 total this year) we used our space for both our booth and camping during the event. This made for an awesome place for the kids to play while the adults talked about rigs and checked out the many cool parts available on-site. We brought the Nitro 4×4 Camper with us, Nitro 200 TRD Pro Land Cruiser, Wagoneer project and a mildly built Jeep TJ. As NWOR is only about 45 minutes from our Washington headquarters we were able to bring some extra trucks with us and have family join as well.
Nitro offered a class on gearing for overland style rigs as well as other options for differential choices, upgraded shafts and we tried to answer as many questions relating to how our components work in different situations as possible. We also sponsored and led a mountain bike trail one morning for those who enjoy 2 wheel self propelled activities as well.
Offroading was an obvious theme at NWOR and the trails didn’t disappoint with spectacular views and some challenging terrain. We shot these pics on the more difficult trail we ran up near the historic town of Liberty, Wa. Steep climbs and deep washed gullies were the rule on that day.
Our second trail of the week was more sedate with a big climb out town and great views of the rugged surrounding mountains. We even ran across a narrow gauge railway owned by a eccentric local in the area.
After the event we discovered that the guys from Expedition Overland had a spare day or so to stay in the area giving us time to regear their new 2016 Tacoma with prototype 4.88 Nitro gears. We grabbed some pics and they shot some video during the installation further improving the new truck for it’s duty as fully outfitted Overlanding and back country machine. Click to check out the video of the install.
In the end we highly recommend experiencing an Overland Rally if one comes near you. Great people, lots to learn, all the cool overlanding products you can imagine and an opportunity to get out and enjoy your own back country rig to it’s fullest.
