Recently we had the opportunity to work with our friends at Magnuson superchargers on a project for our Nitro TRD Pro 200 Series Land Cruiser build in an effort to add some serious power to the 5.7 V8 already under the long white hood. No surprise a late model Land Cruiser is a very sophisticated machine with a ton of electronics, emissions controls and systems for both safety and performance. As this supercharger kit was originally designed for a Tundra and had never been installed on a US spec 200 series we felt that the level of technical skill to do this job correctly was a bit beyond our in house shop capability, especially without a ton of time to give as our guys are already flat out on our own #SEMA2016 project vehicle. After the parts arrived at the shop our timing could not have been better as we ran in to our friend Tor, owner of TorFab Fabrication at the Northwest Overland Rally. Discussion over a few beers ensued and Tor agreed to take on the installation for us after the event ended.
The Nitro 200 series turned out awesome, with huge horsepower gains, exceptional driveability and improved fuel economy to boot. Torfab made it happen and we thought the specialized work they do is well worth sharing in more detail. As a Toyota specialist Torfab works mostly on Land Cruisers, doing everything from restorations to standard maintenance as well as taking on huge projects involving engine swaps, interiors, suspension mods and offroad preparation. Of course, they also sell and install Nitro Gear and Axle products.
Shop Owner Tor showed us his personal 70 series he often uses as a daily driver. What a sleeper. LS swapped with a Corvette motor under the hood the engine looks like it should have been there from new and with a mild exterior you’d never have a clue just how potent this little Cruiser is from the outside.
Restomod? One of the current projects in the shop is an extensive build featuring a 60 series body on shortened 80 series chassis. Add an 500+ HP LSA Cadillac motor, Nitro gears and rebuilt axles, suspension, custom interior and paint and this should be one extremely comfortable and capable Land Cruiser. This one is even getting a fully functional 80 series ABS braking system as part of the build.
Lots of V8 swaps come out of this shop, with one of the most common a Vortec Chevy motor into a 60 series to replace the anemic factory 6 cylinder powerplant. Not built to be fast, but instead have more than adequate power, excellent reliability and much better servicability than stock Torfab does a number of these conversions each year.
Cool Land Cruisers everywhere around the shop ranging from early 40 series to late model Land Cruisers these guys really do it all. If you are a Land Cruiser nut and live in the Pacific Northwest Torfab should be on your list of places to visit someday.
